Gold Nielloware panel in the Legend of Ramakien

This gold nielloware panel was engraved to narrate the legend of Ramakien, a slight adaptation of the Indian legend of Ramayana, as composed by King Rama II. The artisans of Queen Sirikit Institute created this panel in series of three that depicted the most impending scenes of the legend. The three panels depicted the courtship of Tosakanth, the abduction of Sita, and the riding of the Aupakarn horse.

You can see the artisan’s beautifully detailed artwork creating with the engraved embossment that shows the procession of yaksha that serves the asura King Tosakanth on their way to court Sita in Suan Khwan, the exquisite castle crafted with embossed silver creating 3-dimensional depth to the panel. Some parts are pink-gold for difference.

The right of the courtship of Tosakanth panel is the depiction of the abduction of Sita. The panel is embossed with silver, gilded gold on all characters, main ones and background alike. But some are ungilded silver. Sita is depicted still among the flowers and vines. On this piece we can see the scene of the great bird Sadayu and his battle trying to stop Tosakanth from taking Sita away on his chariot as well as Phra Ram’s hunt of the golden deer that is done with much detailed as any crafting of courtship scene.

To the left is the scene of the riding of the Aupakarn horse. The depiction of hermit Vacharamaruk and Phra Ram and Sita’s sons, Phra Mongkut and Phra Lob. The young princes do practice archery, their riding of the horse sacrifice, and their taunting Hanuman the monkey king by drawing on his face. Skilled artisans embossed the scene on silver and gilded gold, leaving textures in some places to create dimension of the piece.
